Shovel duties notwithstanding, I have decided to run for re-election to the Utah House of Representatives. That’s one thing about the House of Representatives–running for election is a near-constant exercise. With only one session under my belt I feel like I’m just finding my sea legs, and yet, somehow, it’s already time for another campaign.
I’ve learned a great deal this past year. I was able to pass a number of modest bills during the last session—mostly clarification bills that simplify the operations of government. I also found myself in the thick of several important bills about water, and was able to work with my colleagues to hammer out compromises and help move three important water bills through the legislature, including one that passed with just 10 minutes left on the final night of the session.
I’ve been reminded this past year of the best and worst aspects of politics: how easily we resort to fear and name calling, how quickly we divide ourselves; and yet, on the other side, how working together we can solve tough problems; how sticking to core principles and values helps sort good bills from bad ones; how ordinary citizens have a voice and make a real difference in the corridors of power.
It remains an honor and a privilege to serve the citizens of House District 18. I am humbled by the trust you put in me to represent you. I know on some level that I am not equal to that task—it’s hard to represent so many people on so many different issues, and impossible to do a perfect job at it, particularly when we have such limited time to consider so many weighty issues. But I have done my level best to serve you.
Will you support me in my re-election effort? I need volunteers to help pass out literature and post signs. Particularly after the session wraps up, I need people willing to host cottage meetings in their homes and to help get the word out.
In short, I welcome your support in any way you choose to pitch in, and please let me know what you might be willing and able to do. I also welcome your comments and suggestions on my service or on any issue of importance to you.
Rep. Tim Hawkes
